Stroke treatment depends on the type, origin, and patient’s health and demands. Stroke neurology treatment has various general approaches:

Emergency treatment:

Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) dissolves blood clots and restores cerebral blood flow in ischemic strokes. This treatment must be given within hours of stroke onset. A catheter is used to remove the clot in mechanical thrombectomy.

Supportive care:

Stroke patients need support to control symptoms and avoid complications. Positioning to prevent aspiration, vital sign monitoring, and appropriate hydration and nutrition are examples.

Medications

to prevent clotting, control blood pressure, cholesterol, and strokes. Diabetes and atrial fibrillation medicines can raise stroke risk.

Rehabilitation:

Stroke patients need rehabilitation to regain function and quality of life. Physical, occupational, speech and language, and psychological counseling may be needed. Rehabilitation enhances mobility, strength, coordination, cognition, and speech.

Prevention:

Stroke neurology treatment requires prevention. This may include diet, exercise, smoking cessation, and chronic disease management. Antiplatelets and anticoagulants can lower stroke risk.
